What You Need To Know About The CrossFit Games

The annual CrossFit Games is probably the event that all CrossFit athletes look forward to. The Opens are almost over, and we’re less than five month away to the actual Games. If you’re new to the CrossFit scene and curious about what’s happening, here are some info that might help:

1. It’s a worldwide competition that has been going on for more than 10 years

The first CrossFit Games took place in 2007, organised by the people at CrossFit. What started as a small contest in California now has thousands of participants worldwide, with representatives coming from more than 170 countries.

2.  The Games start with the Opens, where the challenge is only issued on Thursday

As the Games are open to all, the Opens function as a preliminary round where 200 contestants are shortlisted to advance to Regionals and finally the Games. The organisers will reveal a weekly challenge throughout the five weeks of the Opens. This usually happens on a Thursday, so contestants have the weekend to prepare and perform before their scores are submitted on Monday.

3. People as young as 14 participate in the Opens

The minimum age to enter the Opens is 14 years old. Over the years, many teenagers aged 14-15 have participated. A great thing about the Opens is that you don’t need to be the best in your gym to participate – anyone can join the Opens to see how fit they are compared to the best in the world. Many people also join the Opens to push themselves further in their trainings.

4. The First Prize Winner for this year’s Games will bring home USD300,000

Both the Fittest Man and Woman on Earth will win the same amount of prize money, which is USD300,000 each this year. All top 20 athletes will walk home with attractive prizes after the finals on 5 August 2018.

All the best to all athletes joining the Regionals!
