So You Want To Start Living A Healthy Lifestyle? Here’s How.

What exactly defines a “healthy lifestyle”

The World Health Organisation defines healthy lifestyle as a way of living that:

  • Promotes physical, mental, and social well-being
  • Reduces one’s risk of succumbing to preventable illness or disease.

In short, it’s a lifestyle that makes you feel energetic, happy, and free of any illnesses. A healthy lifestyle is achieved through these aspects:

Healthy Eating

You are what you eat. A healthy and balanced diet is part and parcel of a healthy lifestyle.

No potato chips and carbonated drink; go for carrot bites and smoothies. No burgers and fries; go for roasted chicken and greens.

Your diet should consist of the right amount of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fats. These nutrients are food for your cells, which helps your body to grow and fight diseases. Opt for more plant-based food like grains, fruits and vegetables in your everyday diet, and limit your intake to control your weight.

Do note that what works for one may not for another: the ideal diet for one person may differ from another depending on their health condition. It is advisable to consult a nutritionist to see what suits you best.

Healthy activities

You cannot stay healthy if you do not practise an active lifestyle. Regular exercise is essential in maintaining one’s health, as it helps you to maintain your optimal weight, reduces risk of contracting chronic diseases, and greatly improves your mood by combating depression or anxiety.

Pick up a sport you enjoy – it could be anything from football to badminton, swimming, or even kickboxing. Alternatively, you can hit the gym for a focused workout session; or sign up for a yoga class if that suits you more. Try to clock at least 150 minutes of exercise every week to stay active.

And remember this simple rule: exercise should be fun, not dreadful.

The occasional drink or two is fine – it does help by giving us the ‘feel-good’ factor. We also understand that it’s a popular social activity that is sometimes required at work. Be careful not to go overboard as excessive drinking can increase the likelihood of stroke; cirrhosis; causes depression and emotional disorder; and, induces accidents.

Needless to say, smoking is a big no-no. It is one of the leading preventable causes of death, with direct links to lung cancer and heart diseases. It’s time to snuff out that cigarette, it’s now or never.

Instead of these, make it a habit to go for annual medical check-ups. Consult a doctor whenever you feel there is a need to. Never shy away from asking for any help or advice from the professionals for ways to improve your health. Make sure you heed them too!
